Bill Richards, 91

William Victor (Bill) Richards of RR # 1 Prescott died at Brockville General Hospital on Tuesday, October 10, 2006.

Bill was born Nov. 16, 1914 at Kitley Township to Howard and Myrtle Richards. At age 9, Bill and his family moved to Roebuck, Ontario. After attending Prescott high school and Dairy School in Kemptville Bill became a cheesemaker and milk tester.

He married Gretta Cranston of Sydenham, Ontario on March 27, 1941. During World War II, Bill worked on the manufacturing of war material at the DLD in Prescott. After the war he began a career in the hardware business, first at Wallace’s Hardware in Prescott and then as a commercial traveller for F.W. Wragge and Company in Montreal and W.B. Dalton and Sons in Kingston where he worked for 25 years.

Bill was a dedicated member of St. Paul’s United Church, where he was in the choir and long time clerk of session.

He was a member of both the Blue Lodge and the Royal Arch Masons for 60 years. Bill was skilled in many crafts and his greatest pleasure was working in stained glass. He designed, crafted and installed three memorial stained glass windows at St. Paul’s United Church.

Bill is survived by his wife Gretta of 65 years, his daughters Elva McGaughey (Robert) of Kingston and Helen Richards of Napanee, and grandchildren Andrew McGaughey (Heather) and Jane McGaughey. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Myrtle Gordon.

He was predeceased by his parents and by sister Iola Able. His funeral was held in St. Paul’s United Church, Prescott on Friday, Oct. 13, 2006. The service was conducted by Reverend Douglas Carnegie. The pallbearers were Andrew McGaughey, George Robinson, Edward Robinson, Paul Irvine, and Lyle Behnke. Honourary pallbearers were Orville Wright, and Jim Windsor.
