Lulu “Lou” Abbott

Lulu May Abbott, known as “Lou” died September 28 with her son and daughter-in-law at her side at their Rockport home, where she had lived since July. Formerly a resident of Pearl Street West, she was 83.

Mrs. Abbott was born July 6, 1914, in Almonte, to Stanley Boal and his wife, the former Mabel Millar. She was raised and educated in Almonte, graduated from high school there, then studied at Tabers Business College in Smiths Falls. In 1936, she attended the Brockville School of Nursing.

On June 23, 1938, she married Orvil Robert Abbott in Smith Falls and became a housewife and mother. Her husband died in 1981.

Mrs. Abbott identified with Wall Street United Church, where she helped with the Young Mothers Breakaway group. She was a member of the Multiple Sclerosis Society and volunteered at St. Lawrence Lodge.

She and her husband had taken several trips to Florida. While she was able, she enjoyed knitting. She also liked flowers and gardening.

Mrs. Abbott is survived by her son George and his wife Judy of Rockport, grandsons Randy Abbott and his wife Andrea of Odessa and Richard Abbott and wife Darla of Lyndhurst and grandchildren Alyson, Paul, Nathan and Austin.

Also surviving are her sisters Ione “Oney” Syme of Almonte and Jean McInerney of Minden, Ont., as well as several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a brother Harvey Boal(Almonte).

Friends called at the Johnston and Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, where on September 30 the funeral was held, with Rev. Ron Horst. During the service, a poem entitled “What is Life?” was read by grandson Randy, and daughter-in-law Judy Abbott sang It is Well With My Soul.

Burial followed at Oakland Cemetery. The pallbearers were Don Turner, Jim Paneras, Ivan Hache, Jim Naismith, Jim Haley and Jon Louch.
