Repeat Wedding Vows Occasion Golden Anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. Wm. H. Barkley of 19833 Wall Street, Melvindale, Mich. celebrated their golden Wedding anniversary on May 22nd by repeating their marriage vows before Rev. Jack Lancaster of the Dix Methodist Church. Mr. and Mrs. Barkley’s five children planned the entire affair, as a complete surprise to the couple.

After the ceremony, open house was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Geerlings, Pierson, Ave, Detroit from 1-6 p.m. with a family dinner served later in the evening. Attending were their five children: Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Read, Black Lake, Lake Cheboygan, Mich, Mr. and Mrs. Garnet Barkley, Lincoln Park; Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Barkley, Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Barkley and Mr. Wm. Goerli??? or Detroit; also nine granchildren and three great-granchildren.

The bride’s table was centered with a three-tier wedding cake and yellow flowers. The rooms were ?ast? fully decorated with white and gold wedding b?elle and streamers. Other relatives and friends attending were- Diane and Carol Barkley, Bobby Barkley, Shirley Barkley, John Dolan, of Detroit; Gail, Gary, and Paul Geerlings, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Layman and family, Columbinville, Mich; Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Barkley Jr.; Rev. and Mrs. Jock Lancaster, Mr. and Mrs. Barex?; Mrs. Elaine St. Denis, Mr. and Mrs. Criscara, of Melvindale; Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Hamilton, Owen Sound; Mrs. Lottie Merkley, Iroquois; Mr. and Mrs. H. Holman, Mr. and Mrs. Holman, Mr. and Mrs. D. McKay, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Tanner, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Alfsen, of Haxel Paris, Offesh; Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Chrysler, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Telles and sister, Mary of Detroit; Mrs. Cen. Rathborn, of Montreal; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Rathborn, of Sombro, Ont.

Mr. and Mrs. Barkley were married in Ogdenburg, on May 24th, 1905. Both were well known in Iroquois and Matilda Township. Mrs. Barkley was formerly Ida Rathborn of Brinston, and Mr. Barkley learned the printing trade with the St. Lawrence News in Iroquois. He was the typesetter for Smith Carter’s Story of Dundas. Later he went to went to Montreal where he worked on the Daily Star for 18 years. He served overseas in World War I and on his return moved to Detroit Mich, working on the Free Press for 30 years. Mr. Barkley now has his 40-year Union button and retired last year. In his early years in Iroquois he was a great hockey? enthusiast and sportsman.

Mr. and Mrs. Barkley are well known to Iroquois and Matilda residents and for several years spent their summer holidays in this vicinity with Mrs. Earl Merkley. “Will” says there is no better place for a holiday than along the old St. Larence”, fishing with Garfield McSonald and Lorne Merkley. Mr. Barkley tells many interesting stories of the days in Iroquois when the new canal was being built.
